23rd NATIONAL URBAN TREKKING DAY

Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November: two days of spirituality, history and nature in the places associated with St Francis

As part of the 23rd National Urban Trekking Day, St Francis 1226/2026: in the footsteps of the essential, which celebrates the 800th anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi, Spoleto is organising two days dedicated to exploring the places that mark the saint’s passage through the city and the Spoleto area.

This event aims to be an opportunity for reflection on the life and legacy of St Francis, a central figure in Italian spirituality and a testament to a profound connection with nature, as well as a genuine journey through history, art, culture and landscape.

The programme, entitled Nihil jucundius vidi valle mea spoletana, comprises two distinct experiences: an urban walk through the historic centre and a guided e-bike tour that will take participants to Monteluco to discover the sites linked to the Franciscan presence.

As for the urban walking tour of the sites associated with St Francis, scheduled for Saturday 31 October, the meeting point is at 3.00 pm in Piazza della Libertà, at the tourist information office (IAT). This guided tour will take participants on a journey of discovery through some of the sites in the historic centre linked to St Francis.

The tour will include visits to the Church of Sant’Agata, the Church of San Simone, the Malborghetto within the Rocca Albornoz, and the Cathedral, where the saint’s famous autograph letter is kept. At the end of the walk, there will be a tasting of sweets organised by Dolci d’Italia. The walk will be easy, lasting approximately 3 hours and covering a distance of about 4 kilometres.

Participation is free of charge, but booking is essential: 0743 218620 - front.iat@comune.spoleto.pg.it.

The second day will begin on Sunday 1 November at 10.00 am from the Church of San Sabino, a site linked to the famous episode of St Francis’s ‘dream’, and will feature a guided tour by e-bike. The route will continue through the parts of the historic centre that mark the saint’s journey, before reaching Monteluco, where a visit to the Franciscan Convent and the Sacred Wood is planned. At the end of the tour, participants will be treated to a tasting of sweets provided by Dolci d’Italia. The tour will last approximately 3 hours and cover a distance of around 20 kilometres along a route of moderate difficulty with an elevation gain of 500 metres.

Participation is free of charge, but booking is essential: 0743 218620 - front.iat@comune.spoleto.pg.it.
Twenty e-bikes will be made available free of charge for the occasion.

Given the length of the route and the technical nature of the excursion, participation is recommended for adults with an adequate level of fitness.
