73rd STUDY WEEK ON THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES

From 9 to 14 April at Palazzo Arroni

The 73rd Study Week of the Centre for Studies on the Early Middle Ages, scheduled to take place at Palazzo Arroni (Via Rippo) from 9 to 14 April 2026, will focus on the theme: Theodoric and his age.

The 1500th anniversary of the death of Theoderic the Amal, King of the Ostrogoths, provides an opportunity to reflect on the role and legacy of a central figure in early medieval history. His reign—marked by the blending of the Gothic population that accompanied him with the Italic peoples—represented a period of profound political, cultural, and social transformation. The 2026 Week, dedicated to «Theoderic and His Age», aims to delve deeper into this figure and his era, presenting the findings of the most recent research, which has expanded and sometimes redefined our understanding of the early period of Ostrogothic rule. The Week begins with a reassessment of historical sources on Theoderic and his gens, with the aim of shedding light on their history before arriving in Italy and the dynamics surrounding the king’s rise to power. Sessions dedicated to archaeological research will present the latest analyses and insights into artefacts, settlements, fortifications, and urban structures, offering new data to better understand the material culture of the Ostrogothic kingdom, the recovery of antiquity, and the relationships between the Goths and the Italic populations. Sessions on the politics, economy, law, and religion of Theoderic’s reign will explore the network of relationships woven by the Gothic king with Byzantium, the papacy, the Roman aristocracy, and other Romano-Germanic kingdoms, revealing strategies of governance based on a delicate diplomatic balance. Through an examination of the philosophical, scientific, and artistic productions of the time, the Week also seeks to investigate how Theoderic’s era was characterised by an intellectual output of great breadth, leaving a lasting imprint on medieval culture. Reflections on the creation of the myth of Theoderic and its diffusion in medieval literatures over subsequent centuries will provide an analysis of the evolution of his figure, reinterpreted and transformed over time.
