Spoleto Carnival

The first modern edition of the Spoleto Carnival dates back to around 1800. Until the 1940s, in addition to the parades of floats, there was the custom of burning the 'Carnival', an enormous papier-mâché puppet, in the centre of Piazza Garibaldi.

Currently, the Spoleto Carnival includes parades of allegorical floats made by the inhabitants of the various districts and hamlets in the area, as well as masked balls and side events.

Accompanied by masked groups, the floats parade along the city streets on the last two Sundays of Carnival, first in the historic centre and then in the area between Viale Trento e Trieste and the San Nicolò district, getting the entire community involved in an atmosphere of joy.
