The great beauty

Palazzo Collicola

The Collicola Palace, one of Spoleto's most important aristocratic buildings, hosts the Modern Art Gallery 'Giovanni Carandente', the homonymous Library, and the municipal gallery with paintings ranging from the 16th to the 19th century, including the famous Spezieria from Guercino's workshop.

Its noble apartment, located on the first floor, represents an admirable example of 18th century aristocratic residence. In addition to the aforementioned collection of antique works, it hosts a precious Gallery entirely decorated with 18th century tempera paintings, as well as part of the palace's original furnishings, including some refined gilded console tables. The Modern Art Gallery 'G. Carandente', which is housed on the second floor of the Palace and consists mainly of acquisitions by Premio Spoleto, bequests from the exhibition Sculture nella città - Spoleto 62, and the donation of Giovanni Carandente's personal collection, to these days still represents the largest and most varied municipal museum of modern and contemporary art in Umbria.
Thanks to the presence of international artists such as Alexander Calder, David Smith, Sol Lewitt, Beverly Pepper, Richard Serra, Isamu Noguchi, Anthony Caro, and Italian artists like Leoncillo, the most celebrated artist from Spoleto and one of the most important Italian sculptors of the 20th century, Giò and Arnaldo Pomodoro, Melotti, Colla, Uncini, Consagra, Franchina, Lorenzetti, it is actually a unique museum in Italy, with a special focus on contemporary sculpture.
The Library contains more than thirty thousand volumes, mainly concerning modern and contemporary art. The publications consist of monographic studies regarding Italian and foreign artists, museum catalogues, art movements, solo and group exhibitions, texts on art criticism, art history, environmental art, restoration, minor and applied arts, contemporary architecture, photography, history of music and dance, encyclopaedias, Italian and foreign literature.
