The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale was founded in 1947 by lawyer and musicologist Adriano Belli, in order to initiate into the profession of opera those young people with special artistic qualities who, having completed their singing studies, had not yet made their debut.
Every year the institution holds the European Community Competition for Young Opera Singers, during which an international jury selects candidates from all over Europe. After a preparatory course aimed at perfecting all technical skills and musical and interpretative skills related to belcanto, the winners of the competition make their debut in the Opera Season.
Many internationally known great singers are listed among the winners of the Teatro Lirico Competition and they had studied and debutes in Spoleto, under the guidance of prestigious teachers and directors.
The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale has been a guest performer with concerts and operas not only in Italy but also in numerous European and non-European countries. At the “Centro Studi-Belli Argiris,” the historical archive and media library of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, there is a rich music library and a well-stocked audio-video library dedicated to opera.
