The Lombards in Italy: Places of Power (568–774 AD)
Arriving from northern Europe, the Longobards settled in Italy where, between the 6th and 8th centuries, they developed a new and original culture that spread over the vast territories they dominated. The process of cultural synthesis implemented by the Lombards, integrating the classical-Roman tradition, the spirituality of Christianity, Byzantine influences and Germanic values, marked the transition between Antiquity and the European Middle Ages. The serial site bears witness to the pivotal role played by the Lombards in the spiritual and cultural development of medieval European Christianity, in particular by enhancing the monastic movement.
