A succession of mountains and hills covered with olive groves and streaked with countless dry stone walls:
this is the scenery you can admire as you head north away from Spoleto. Dominated by the silvery green of the Spoleto-Assisi olive belt, which unravels
along the mountainside for over 40 kilometres, this marvellous lanscape is the result of the close link between local communities and olive production,
between human activity and the natural environment.
A unique balance, the fruit of centuries of profound connection and mutual influence.
The excellent PDO extra virgin olive oil is produced here.
Among the small villages along the olive belt, the village of Eggi stands out. Perched on a hill behind the ridge separating the Spoleto Valley
from the Valnerina, with its houses close to each other and its maze of winding alleyways, Eggi is a treasure chest of precious gems, such as the
Church of San Giovanni Battista, which houses frescoes by Giovanni di Pietro known as Lo Spagna, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and the
Church of San Michele Arcangelo, with interesting works by the anonymous Master of Eggi.
Continuing northwards, you will come across the small hamlets of Bazzano and Poreta, ancient castles surrounded by olive trees, where you can feel a suspended
atmosphere between past and present, typical of places that are strongly linked to agricultural tradition. Both villages can also be reached on foot through the
St Francis’ Way, the Franciscan itinerary that cuts across the olive belt and offers travellers enchanting views of the Spoleto plain.
Festivals and popular events enliven these lands during spring and summer. One of the most famous is the Asparagus Festival in Eggi (end of April), a traditional
celebration where you can taste succulent local dishes based on wild asparagus.
Ancient traditions, genuine flavours and enjoyable lifestyle: the ideal ingredients for those who wish to get off the beaten tourist track and immerse themselves
in the most authentic Umbria, through a continuous discovery of small hidden gems.
