It was lauded, immortalised and celebrated by Michelangelo, Goethe, Stendhal, Turner, D'Annunzio, Carducci. It has become part of the collective imagination as an international city of art, as a paradigm of culture and entertainment, especially since Gian Carlo Menotti chose it, in 1958, as the venue for the Festival dei 2 Mondi, one of the world's most prestigious and influential multidisciplinary events. The city, with its historical core characterized by narrow, winding streets, is nestled in a lovely setting, extending on the slopes of Colle Sant'Elia and overlooking Monteluco. The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale was founded here in 1947, while the Italian Center for Studies on the Early Middle Ages was inaugurated in 1952.
An important Roman colony and later capital of the Longobard Duchy, significant place of the Pontifical State, ancient "Caput Umbriae, Spoleto is part of the Unesco World Heritage since 2011, with the serial site "Longobards in Italy. Places of power (568-774 AD)".
Spoleto is an exemplary combination of nature and culture, a place on a human scale, with a prominent medieval and Renaissance appearance, but very ancient origins.
Its urban stratification is easily readable through its precious and millenary historical-architectural heritage preserved with careful urban protection.
A city full of outstanding monuments, theatres, churches, enhanced by an excellent gastronomic tradition and surrounded by a still intact and wild nature, which serves as a charming backdrop to the urban core.
Spoleto is a multi-millennial city and its museums tell of its historical and cultural identity as well as its vocation to the artistic avant-garde in the visual and performing arts. The collections preserved in the equally prestigious museums constitute a dense network of evidences on the evolution, from ancient origins to the contemporary age, of the city and on the fortunes that led to the establishment of an extraordinary cultural unity in the territory.
