In the Spoleto area there are several dozen hectares of chestnut groves, whose trees can reach monumental dimensions. The typical variety of this area is the ‘marrone’, which is particularly appreciated because it is larger and sweeter than the chestnut.
The chestnut tree has always played a prominent role in the economy of the Spoleto area, both for its fruit and for the production of timber. The main production areas of the “Marrone della Valle Spoletana” are Montebibico, Pompagnano, Valle San Martino, and Vallocchia; smaller chestnut-growing areas include Borgiano, Acqualacastagna, Valdarena, Castagnacupa, Catinelli, Montelirossi, and Messenano.
Unlike the chestnut, which is the fruit of the wild tree, the marrone is the product of a cultivated tree that has been modified through successive grafts. Marroni have particular energetic properties, being rich in starches and sugars, as well as minerals and vitamins; they are therefore very effective in combating physical and mental fatigue. They are suitable for those who are lactose intolerant and provide the necessary carbohydrates for those who are intolerant to cereals. The fiber they contain is very important for reducing cholesterol and preventing gastrointestinal disorders.
There are many ways to enjoy this fruit: from simple roasted chestnuts, accompanied by a good wine, to jams and preserves; from flour to make “castagnaccio” to boiled chestnuts.
Producer associations and public entities have long been committed to enhancing the value of local chestnuts, with the aim of obtaining PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) recognition.
