Trebbiano Spoletino is an ancient grape variety grown only in Umbria, in the area between Spoleto and Montefalco. After decades of neglect, it has been rediscovered in recent years thanks to the tenacity of local producers, who have strongly desired to emphasise and promote this native variety that has shaped the area's agricultural landscape for centuries.
Until after the Second World War, vines were grown as trees, marinated with elm or maple trees, according to an ancient method that uses the plants as supports and exploits the vine's climbing nature, allowing it to extend with long shoots laden with bunches of grapes.
This particular cultivation method, which makes the grapes less susceptible to damage from fog, humidity and animals, is still used by some producers in the area.
The Trebbiano Spoletino vine gives rise to a wine with a straw-yellow colour tending to gold, characterised by fruity and floral notes, fresh and savoury, fairly alcoholic and with a marked acidity. It goes excellently with cold meats, tasty cheeses, first and second courses containing fish or white meat
After its rediscovery, Trebbiano Spoletino became a full-fledged member of the list of great Italian wines and in 2011 obtained DOC recognition and the approval of the relevant production regulations.
