The Spoleto-Assisi cycle path is a pleasant route of about 50 km, mostly flat, that connects cities and villages of extraordinary historical and artistic interest. The path rides along the banks of streams and rivers, immersed in the beauty of the Umbrian Valley, and allowes to discover the territories of Spoleto, Campello sul Clitunno, Trevi, Montefalco, Foligno, Bevagna, Cannara, and Assisi.
Starting from Spoleto, the cycle path begins in the locality of San Nicolò, at the Terminal Le Mattonelle, where bicycles can also be rented. The route heads north, crossing the Spoleto plain, with landscapes dominated by the silvery green of the Spoleto-Assisi olive belt.
After a few kilometers, the path arrives in the small hamlet of San Giacomo, with its 14th-century rectangular castle and the parish church containing precious frescoes by the painter known as Lo Spagna. By continuing, it enters the territory of Campello sul Clitunno, close to the suggestive Clitunno Springs and the Clitunno Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Always surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, it is worth deviating from the route and tackling some climbs to visit the characteristic villages of Trevi and Montefalco. The city of Foligno is also a short distance from the cycle path and can be reached with a flat detour of about 5 kilometers. Returning to the route, it arrives in Bevagna, a splendid medieval town where the waterways from the entire Umbrian Valley converge. After passing through Cannara, a small town renowned throughout Italy for its onion cultivation, the majestic Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli heralds the arrival to Assisi.
In 2015, the itinerary formed by the Spoleto-Assisi cycle path and the route of the former Spoleto-Norcia Railway was awarded as the best green route in Italy, winning the Italian Green Road Award at the Cosmo Bike Show.
