The St. Francis' Way is a unique pilgrimage route, a timeless journey through hermitages, sanctuaries, ancient forests, and medieval towns that inspired the mystical experience of St. Francis of Assisi and his love for creation.
The path spans three regions—Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio—touching places of fundamental importance in the Franciscan experience, such as the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi and the Sanctuary of La Verna, and crossing extraordinarily beautiful landscapes like the Monte Subasio Park and the Nera River Valley.
Spoleto is a key stop on the Franciscan itinerary, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, where one of the only two autograph letters of the Saint is preserved, and the Sacred Wood of Monteluco, a place imbued with an atmosphere of peace and sanctity. Here stands the Sanctuary of St. Francis, a settlement that tradition says was founded by the Saint himself, where you can admire the seven small cells built by Francis for himself and his brothers. Scattered along the various paths that cross the Sacred Wood are also the hermit caves inhabited since early Christian times, which testify to the presence of saints such as Francis, Anthony of Padua, Bonaventure, and Bernardino of Siena.
North of Spoleto, the path winds along the olive belt extending towards Assisi, touching the characteristic villages of Eggi, Bazzano, and Poreta.
Information, maps, and GPX tracks of all the stages of the St. Francis' Way are available on the official website www.viadifrancesco.it
