The Martani Mountains extend in a nearly regular pattern for about 45 km, from north to south. These mountains have gentle slopes and low, rounded peaks, reaching their highest elevation with the summit of Mount Torre Maggiore (1120 meters above sea level).
The vast forest and grassland covers that cloak this territory contain the main floristic and vegetational characteristics of Umbria, distinguished by the richness of summit blooms and a specific variability that makes the Martani a true “natural botanical garden.”
The variety of plant environments also ensures interesting biodiversity at the faunal level: discovering the animal world of the Martani Mountains translates into a precious adventure that can only enrich the magnificent experience awaiting those who undertake this journey.
The high permeability of the limestone rocks, with the fault system that has fractured them, has allowed the formation of a high underground water circulation and various karst forms: the large and spectacular isolated sinkholes like the Tifene, the Pozzale chasm, which represents an interesting example of a collapse sinkhole, and the karst plains, including that of Casetta San Severo.
Between the foothill and valley areas, there are some mineral and medium-mineral springs, precious resources that nature, still unspoiled, and the particular attention of humans have preserved in their integrity. Among all, we remember those of San Faustino, Amerino, and Furapane.
The invitation to the hiker is to combine each stage with a visit to the many castles and ancient villages that dot these mountains and to try the gastronomic excellences that distinguish our territory.
