The museum is located inside the Rocca Albornoz, at the top of the Hill of Saint Elia, in the upper part of the historic center of Spoleto. Organized into two spaces around the Courtyard of Honor, one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor, it is divided into fifteen rooms and represents an interesting document of knowledge about the Spoleto area from the 4th to the 15th century.
The collection, displayed in two spaces around the Courtyard of Honor, one on the ground floor and the other on the first floor, is exhibited across fifteen rooms. The museum, designed as a tool for understanding the city and its territory, aims to convey to visitors both the complexity of the historical events that have affected it and its cultural vibrancy even after the fall of the Duchy.
The works and materials, displayed according to a timeline from the 4th to the 15th century A.D., cover themes such as the Christian community in the area, with artifacts from the 4th-5th centuries coming from funerary areas and places of worship, the phenomenon of monasticism, widespread throughout the Spoleto area, the social organization of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto, the Carolingian-Ottonian period, the period from the empire to the papacy, the communal age, and the 15th century.
The Lombard section is admirable, and contains some of the most precious grave goods from the necropolis of Nocera Umbra, one of the most important in Italy. Visitors can also admire floor mosaics and sculptural decorations dating back to the 6th century, as well as sculptural fragments from places of worship from the Lombard and Carolingian-Ottonian periods. There is also a rich painting section that documents the Romanesque period, as well as elements of the Renaissance style of the 15th century.
