Towering over the ravine that separates Colle Sant'Elia from Monteluco, the Ponte delle Torri (Towers Bridge) is one of the city's most iconic monuments. It is an aqueduct of astonishing dimensions - 230 metres long and 76 metres high - made of local limestone and supported by nine piers connected through ogival arches. The two central supports are hollow and contain inner rooms that served as guard posts.
Over the structure rises a wall about 12 metres high, which delimits the road above the bridge for its entire length. The bridge was presumably built between the 13th and the 14th century, with the aim of ensuring a supply of water to the city, which arrived through a canal from the aqueducts of Cortaccione and Patrico. Today, the bridge still serves as a link between the historic centre of Spoleto and Monteluco, thanks to the presence of a walkway. Perhaps its name derives from Pons inter turres, because it was guarded at both ends by two fortresses: the Rocca and the Fortilizio dei Mulini. Over the centuries, it always represented a source of fascination for travellers and important historical figures, as testified by Goethe's sentence on the plaque at the entrance.
