The great beauty

Diocesan Museum and Basilica of St. Eufemia

The visit to the monumental complex of the Duomo is an evocative journey that allows you to get to know the Cathedral from unusual points of view, with its imposing bell tower, the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia.

Inaugurated in the seventies of the last century, the museum was born from the need to enhance and save the historical-artistic heritage of the Diocese of Spoleto-Norcia from ruin. Located in the complex of the archbishop's palace, which also includes the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia, it unfolds in the representation wing.
The bell tower, built between 1173 and 1198 using materials of previous buildings, incorporates a smaller one from the Roman era; between the two towers there is a staircase through which it is possible to climb to the top and enjoy a unique view of the city and the vast surrounding area.
In addition to visiting the Cathedral, it is possible to continue the visit to the Diocesan Museum and to the Basilica of Sant'Eufemia. The Museum, located inside the Archbishop's Palace, unfolds in the palace's reception rooms, called "Cardinal's Apartment", which feature frescoes painted starting from the second half of the sixteenth century. The works are exhibited following a chronological and thematic criterion: among the artists present Filippino Lippi, Domenico Beccafumi, Cavalier d'Arpino, Sebastiano Conca, up to Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
From the Cardinal's Chapel of the Diocesan Museum you can access, through a passage, the women's galleries of the Basilica of San'Eufemia, one of the most notable examples of Romanesque architecture in Umbria.
