The museum bears witness to the lignite mining activity carried out in the territory of Spoleto for about a century until 1961 and that was serving the Terni's steel plant, where lignite was used in blast furnaces.
In the Spoleto mines, active from March 1881 to October 1961, lignite was extracted. The mines were scattered across various districts of the city and, together with the Terni steel plant, gave impetus to the regional industrial sector.
One of the shafts in Morgnano, the Pozzo Orlando, has been restored and renovated and since 2009 has been home to the Mines Museum.
The museum acts as a symbolic place of memory, both for its importance in the mining system and for the tragic events that involved it in 1955, marking the collective memory of the town forever. The museum displays collections of working objects, artefacts and historical documents. Periodically, the museum also hosts presentations and artistic initiatives created for the site, in close dialogue with it and its history.
